Description
Amoxil is a broad-spectrum aminopenicillin antibiotic that works by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively killing susceptible bacteria. It targets organisms like H. influenzae, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and some Staphylococci. However, it’s ineffective against penicillase-producing bacteria, viruses, fungi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and most Proteus species.
Take as directed, with or without food. Chewable tablets: Chew before swallowing. Capsules: Swallow whole with water. Inform your doctor if you have allergies (especially to cephalosporins or penicillin), asthma, liver/kidney disease, bleeding disorders, or mononucleosis.
Never take a double dose of this medication. If it is almost time of the next dose just skip the missed portion and continue to take the medicine according to the schedule.
May reduce contraceptive effectiveness; use backup methods. Complete the full course—stopping early can lead to antibiotic resistance. Diarrhea (including in breastfed infants) may occur; consult your doctor.
Avoid sharing antibiotics—symptoms may stem from non-bacterial causes.
Common side effects: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, dizziness, abdominal pain.
Serious side effects (seek help): Severe allergic reactions (hives, swelling), confusion, easy bruising.
Amoxicillin is not known to decrease effect of birth control pills, increases absorption of digoxin, increases toxicity of metotrexat. Excretion of Amoxicillin by kidneys is slowed by aspirin.
Symptoms of Amoxicillin overdose may be vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, disorders of water and electrolytes balance. Contact your doctor for help.
